Cliff has had a passion for hairstyling from a very young age, three to be exact.   He has always been amazed at the diversity of hair when it comes to styles, length, color, texture, etc.  That same diversity always reminds him of his childhood, how he played with his mother’s micro braids and how he came to the decision that he would pursue hairstyling as a career.  At age 5, Cliff would play with Barbie dolls for the sole purpose of doing all the things that you do to hair such as washing, drying, combing and creating hair styles. At a young age his mother would just inspire him. Needless to say his grandfather and father were not pleased with his choice of toys.  In fact, they would hide them from him in hopes that it would deter him; it did for a while.  He went on to play sports, which his father coached, Cliff had an effort to make them happy.  Although he was good at basketball and football, his heart wasn’t in it.  When he hit younger teen years, he saved hismoney and bought mannequin heads, 14 to be exact, so that hecould go back to doing hair.  His father still disapproved but Cliff continued.  After many disagreements both verbal and physical, his father left.  Cliff’s mother had just had surgery and was in a bit of a financial struggle.  It was during this time that he began to do hair and pick up more clientele; going to their houses and commute back and forth via public transportation.  Whatever money he made for his hair services, which was very inexpensive, (e.g. $40 Sew-Ins, $20 Caps), he would give to his mother for bills.

THE BEGINNING

At one point, Cliff had to go live with a friend until his mother got herself together; this lasted about three months.  Once she settled into their current home in Wilmington, he used the basement as his personal hair salon.  At 16, he was averaging about five people per day at $70. With his mother & grandmother being some of his top supporters! That lasted for about a year until he began working at an actual hair salon so that he could gain experience as well as further build his clientele.  That year had its ups and downs; he experienced growth as well as personal tragedies.  He felt like hewas a target as he became the victim of a home burglary, where only his items were stolen, and on a separate occasion had a brick thrown through his window.  He then decided to go live with his grandmother who lives in New Jersey.  The commute was a struggle but Cliff managed as he had saved enough to buy his first car.  The summer of his 17th birthday, he met Ms. Willa at a hair convention.  Through her, Cliff became a Traveling Weave Specialist and gained the much needed exposure as he traveled to New York, Washington, D.C. and Atlanta.  He was fortunate to have attended the Broner Brother Hair show where he was able to interact with many celebrities.  There he met Ming Lee who inspired him after hearing how she started her business with just $500 and a domain name.

It was a culmination of all these experiences that solidified the fact that he wanted to be a celebrity hairstylist.

Cliff’s beginnings were small and he has done work for no fee and expecting nothing in return except for promotion/praising his work.

THE FUTURE

What are his future plans? To involve the youth more. To impact on younger teens to tell them to follow their dreams and never ever give up! To make more women feel beautiful & happy. To expand his brand and business as far as he can! To give back to the community, and less fortunate. To also change the game around for hairstylist... Because we are HAIR!

Last year, he decided to create his own line of hair products.    Again with the help of his parents & grandparents that dream has come to fruition and “Silkening Mist” is now available.  Cliffs hair inspirations has been very instrumental in his success. He went through a 30- day marketing challenge which consists of uploading 3 pictures on a daily basis, commenting and showing people love.  He took that challenge and aimed it towards commenting and showing love to celebrities.  It was through this marketing challenge that he met Tiffany “New York” Pollard and other celebrities.  After leaving a comment under Tiffany’s picture, Antonio (her assistant) reached out to him to discuss the possibility of doing Tiffany’s hair.  Long story short, he traveled 5 ½ hours to make his first celebrity client appointment.  Cliff was in awe of being able to do Tiffany’s hair.  Nowadays, he finds himself booking appointments, traveling to conduct seminars and teach classes, and  also having other celebrity clientele. Cliff is also getting ready to graduate high school, ready for new opportunities.
